POP's Story - Our History

POP’s is an acronym for Pride of Philly Steaks. Shortly after we opened our customers began calling us “POP’s Philly Steaks” or just “POP’s.” That’s fine with us, because POP’s is an easy to remember short name for our cheesesteak restaurant.
Our building is located at 501 S. Decaur Blvd. in Las Vegas, Nevada (on the Southeast corner of Alta and Decatur). It’s our only location, and I think this is one of the things that makes our sandwiches special; you can’t find a POP’s on every corner.
The distinctive POP’s A-frame building was actually built in 1964 by a franchisee for Weiner Schnitzel. It later became Weenie Benter and then the restaurant was changed to an A&W Root beer for some time. Then in 1993 it became a cheesesteak restaurant.
POP’s acquired the restaurant in July 2002. Since then we have been operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week and 365 days a year. We have made it our goal to never close the doors or the order window at POP’s.
Our customers love us because we serve a wonderfully delicious sumptuous cheesesteak sandwich that is so authentically reminiscent of the sandwiches that are served in the greater Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is where the Philly cheesesteak became famous. It was actually introduced in the early 1930s when the first one was devoured.
Our iconic figure head is Benjamin Franklin. We have a mural of Benjamin Franklin holding a cheesesteak.. One little bit of trivia is that Bejamin Franklin was allegedly a vegetarian but we figured, “so what”, not that many people knew that bit of trivia and if he were holding a cheesetsteak then it would be reminiscent of Philidephia and the City of Brotherly Love. Benjamin Franklin is one of the great founders of our wonderful country, so we thought it was appropriate to have him holding one of our delicious cheesesteaks. That’s the explanation for the mural on both sides of the building at 501 S. Decatur Blvd.
A lot of people have said that the mural is actually a picture of me, the POP’s owner, Perry Walton, because we do look a lot alike. We favor each other, although Benjamin Franklin had a receding hairline. I think we favor each other with our round look. We have a lot of times been complimented by having that mural there on the wall but that’s not what really makes POP’s what it is.
Where POP’s distinguishes itself is customer service. We strive to serve not only a great tasting sandwich, but a great looking sandwich as well. Our employees take great pride in their jobs. We give our employees a lot of freedom to make customer service decisions. When our employees make a sandwich, they sometimes make an error estimating the quantity of meat. We insist that any error made is on the side of too much rather than too little in terms of the quantity of meat that is served in our sandwiches.
Our customers love us because we serve a great product, at a fair price, by friendly, courteous and professional staff.
There are some photographs of our sandwiches in the photo gallery. We will have those also on the menu page where you can actually go through the menu and you can see that. Some of the other pages are the large order discount and delivery page. We don’t deliver locally unless we have a minimum order of 50 sandwiches. We will make a delivery if we have a 50 sandwich minimum. We also have large offer discounts. Those you need to inquire about, but they can range up to 25 % off the regular retail price depending on the quantity that are ordered, something to keep in mind if you have a large function or a large group and you need a lot of sandwiches.
A number of automobile dealers order from our stores on Saturdays for their luncheons. They may order 100 or 200 sandwiches. Typically we will just make a mix up of sandwiches so that they can dress them after they arrive. What I mean by dressings is with the mushrooms and onions and peppers and hot peppers and different types of cheeses when they arrive at the location where they are to be served.
